about me
I’m noble george, a colloid of stardust on a pale blue dot.
The stardust is literal. Almost every atom in me heavier than hydrogen was made by a star, in its life or in its death. The colloid is how I think. I’m a generalist: I stay suspended in several subjects at once, without dissolving into any one of them or settling out of them.
Colloids also scatter light, which is why a beam shows up in a smoky room. That is the kind of seeing I trust most. A problem shows me its path only when something from another subject is hanging in the air around it.
In the photograph Voyager 1 took in 1990 at Carl Sagan’s urging, from beyond the orbit of Neptune, the whole Earth fills less than a pixel. Every subject I wander between, and every line we have drawn between them, fits inside it.
